TURNING THE TIDES

Hoʻohuli Ana I Ke Kai: By prioritizing healing and education that restores connection to the Earth, we are working to break the cycle of incarceration and recidivism in Hawai‘i.

The incarceration rate for Native Hawaiians is strikingly high. The Department of Public Safety report that Natie Hawaiians make up approximately 40% of the state's prison population, despite comprising only about 23% of the overall population. Recidivism rates are also alarmingly high, with around 60% returning to prison within three years of release, according to a study by the University of Hawaii.

To address this, Turning the Tides is a program rooted in love for the land and water, that helps people reconnect through educational and community-based alternatives re-connect with traditional practices as a way of restoring them back to the land and waters from which we draw life.
